Starboard and port are ways to say "right" and "left" when you're on a boat or a ship!

Boats have been around for thousands of years, with pirates, fishermen, and sailors. With all that history behind it, life at sea (on a boat) has its own customs and culture. There are special, traditional ways of saying things.

When you want to talk about the left side of a ship (when you're looking forward, the way the ship is facing), you can use "port." You can use "starboard" to talk about the right side. So, you might say, "I see a whale off the port side of the ship!"

Ship to Shore

Cars use roads and highways, while boats use rivers and oceans. Both are great ways for people to get from one place to another, but they both have their own challenges. Make a list of the good things about riding on boats and in cars. When you're done, think about which you'd like to take on your next vacation!
