Why is Friday the 13th unlucky?

When the sixth day of the week meets the number 13, some people may start to feel a little unlucky! Others may put off traveling or making big decisions until Friday the 13th has passed. But what’s so unlucky about a day of the week and an odd number, anyway?

Believe it or not, the “unlucky” feeling experienced on Friday the 13th probably has to do with doubts about both Fridays and the number 13! While Friday may be a favorite day of the week for some people, there are others who feel that it’s not lucky to begin something new on a Friday, like a starting a job or buying a house.

When it comes to the number 13, many tall buildings skip the 13th floor, going straight from the 12th to the 14th! There are hotels that leave out Room #13, addresses that jump from 12 to 12 ½ to 14, and airports that skip from gate 12 to 14. There are even stories and instances in history when a 13th guest at a gathering or dinner seemed bring misfortune to others.

Whatever you feel about Friday the 13th, remember that it’s just a day, and you can decide to make it a great one!

There may be another reason for the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th, and it has to do with the number 13 itself! To many people, the number 12 feels complete, or whole. We hear it often—there are the 12 hours on the clock, the 12 months of the year, even the 12 days of Christmas.

Add one more to get 13, and things may seem a little out of sorts, or less whole! But as easy as it is to be suspicious, there are plenty of people who feel that 13 is just a number, and a very interesting one at that!
