The twinkling light of stars shining from way up in the sky is a beautiful sight! Have you ever gazed up the night sky and wondered how those magical shiny lights stay up there??

When you think of a star falling down out of the sky, you are probably thinking about what Earth’s gravity does to the things you throw into the air or up towards the sky, like a ball you toss to your friend which falls back down again. The gravity on Earth is a special force that is constantly pulling you and everything around you toward the center of the Earth. It’s what makes tree leaves fall to the ground instead of floating up into the air when they come loose, and what makes you land on two feet when you jump into the air.

However, because stars are so far away from Earth, they are not affected by Earth’s gravity and they aren’t pulled “downwards” like so many other things you’re used to! Instead, they stay up in the sky to shine and twinkle all night long!!

Star light, star bright!

What are some other neat things you know about stars? For example did you know that the sun is actually a really big star?? Do you know the name of the galaxy of the stars that Earth is located in?? The answer is the Milky Way!

What are some of your favorite things about stars? Is it their pretty light, or playing connect-the-dots to find constellations and fun shapes??
