Why does popcorn make a popping sound?

Pop! Pop-pop-pop!! Poppity-pop-pop! That sound can only mean one thing: popcorn! Believe it or not, popcorn makes that popping sound because each tiny kernel contains a little droplet of water inside of it!

When you heat popcorn, the droplet of water inside of the kernel heats up too. Heating up that droplet of water causes it to expand and get bigger while it turns into steam. Eventually this causes so much pressure inside the kernel of corn that the whole thing just – pop! – bursts open! This basically turns the popcorn kernel inside-out so that the starchy insides end up on the outside!

Popcorn has been around for thousands of years, and before people knew the science behind that little droplet of water, they had to make up stories about what caused all of that noise and explosive popping! – What are some ideas you might have used if you needed to come up with your own explanation??

Pop-ular!

Aside from being a yummy a snack, popcorn is also sometimes used for decoration! Have you ever made a popcorn necklace? You might need a little bit of help, but it's mostly very easy!

All you need to get started is popcorn and string (dental floss works well!). String the popcorn over the string using a needle to thread through each piece of popcorn. Make sure you find a needle without a sharp point so that you don't hurt yourself.

When you're finished, you can either tie the ends together or use a button! Just make sure you buy unbuttered popcorn, or else when you finish, you'll have some pretty sticky fingers!!
