Why do we have hair? |

Have you ever noticed that lots of animals have fur? – Cats, dogs, rabbits, monkeys: Fur, fur, fur, fur! All of these furry animals are known as “mammals,” and the reason they have fur is because most mammals rely on fur to help them control their body temperature!
Of course, there are some exceptions to the rule. Aside from mammals like dolphins and rhinos (who only have a very little bit of hair), humans are a major non-furry mammal!
Most likely, the hair that people have today is what’s now left of the fur we probably once had over our entire bodies! No one is sure exactly when or why humans evolved to lose their fur. Some scientists believe that humans with less fur began surviving more easily when parasites like lice were causing health problems to those who had more fur. Other ideas say that humans lived in the water for a while, so we adapted to become better swimmers and lost most of our fur, like dolphins and whales!
No one knows the definite reason why we retained the hair on our heads and some other places, even though we lost the majority of our body fur. It could be that having hair on our heads is helpful for keeping warm, or it could be some other cool, yet-to-be-discovered idea!
