When people drive and need to park their cars, it's pretty easy. All they need to do is find a space. (Okay, this can sometimes be difficult!) With boats and ships, it's a little bit harder.  They don't "park" on the flat road, they park on the wavy, moving water.

A dock is like a parking space for boats. They are made by people so that boats can be parked, repaired, or loaded or unloaded with cargo.  A dock is a space that's safe from the very rough water, and it's set up so that boats don't crash into each other.

There are many other types of man-made platforms near the shore, like piers and wharfs.  These platforms can have many uses, but docks are always used for boats and ships.

Cars use roads and highways, while boats use rivers and oceans.  Both  are great ways for people to get from one place to another, but they both have their own challenges.  Make a list of the good things about riding on boats and in cars.  When you're done, think about which you'd like to take on your next vacation!
