Why do some people lose their hair?

Browse → Human Body → Getting Older
What color is your hair? Is it long or short? There are all colors, lengths and textures of hair in our world. Some people don’t have any hair at all. You may wonder why some heads are full of hair while others are bald.
Another word for hair loss is “alopecia.” There are many reasons why alopecia occurs, and it doesn’t always result in a complete loss of hair. Sometimes people lose hair because there is a change in the number of hair follicles on their scalp that are growing new hair. These changes may be caused by factors like a poor diet or stress that lasts for many months. Hair loss can also be caused by trauma to the hair follicle, such as when a hairstyle that pulls on the scalp is repeatedly worn.
Sometimes people go bald because they have a sensitivity to one of the chemicals the body produces (called a hormone). Over time, the hair follicles that are sensitive to this hormone become smaller and eventually stop growing hair. This type of hair loss is a main reason why many grown-ups lose hair. Other reasons for baldness include illnesses that cause the body’s immune system to attack the hair follicles, or treatments for illnesses, such as chemotherapy treatment for cancer

Sometimes hair grows back after it falls out, and other times it does not. The good news is that there are treatments and tools for coping with hair loss. For example, some people going through cancer treatment choose to wear wigs, hats or colorful scarves until their hair grows back! Other people take medicine to help their hair regrow, or to slow down the process of balding. Often people who deal with hair loss come to find that while they miss the hair they once had, it’s their inner qualities that truly make them special!
