A church is a very special building for people that belong to Christian religions. This group of religions shares a belief in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (also known as Jesus Christ.) Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God and that God created the Universe. One thing that Jesus taught was that people should to go to church to show respect to God.

In churches, people come together with other people who share their religious beliefs. People usually wear their nicest clothes and are very well-behaved inside. They often share prayers and sing songs about their beliefs. Church leaders will usually read some of Jesus’s teachings from a special book called the “Bible.” These teachings tell Christians how to be good people and how to be closer to God.

Churches are also used for special events and ceremonies. Weddings and funerals will happen inside churches. Many Christians also believe that people can go to church to be forgiven for any bad or mean things that that might do.

A Church by Any Other Name…

The word “church” is usually used just for Christians, but many other religions have special buildings where people can go to pray and share together. Buddhists call these places “temples.” People who practice Judaism may also call theses buildings “temples” but also “synagogues.” Muslims gather in buildings called “mosques.”

Not all Christians use the word “church.” Mormons go to “temples” or “meetinghouses.” Jehovah’s Witnesses call their meeting place “Kingdom Hall.”

There are many other names for buildings like churches too! The most important thing about these buildings – whatever they are called – is that people can come together and celebrate the things they believe in.
