Why do people fall in love?

by Mya Kagan (whyzz writer) >> more about the author

There are lots of different thoughts, feelings, and ideas about love, but most people agree that love is a very strong feeling of affection that people often feel towards other people or things they really, really like. There are many kinds of love, and every type of love has its own very special embodiment in the ways it is expressed and the reasons it exists!

When people refer to “falling in love” they are usually referring to romantic love, like the kind between two grown-up partners such as a husband and wife. No one knows exactly why people fall in love, but there are lots of great ideas! For example, many people believe that they fall in love with their “soul mate,” a special person that they were meant to be with. Some people experience “love at first sight” and there’s an immediate click, while others take longer to get to know a person and develop their feelings over time. Often, people describe a special connection, saying the person they’ve fallen in love with completes them or complements them. – None of these reasons or ways that people fall in love are any “better” than the others, and most likely you can see some similarities between them!

If you find it all a bit confusing or hard to understand, that’s okay – plenty of grown-ups find it confusing too! Lots of people say that falling in love is a very special feeling and that when it happens, you just know it!

Luv, Luv, Luv

Ask some of the grown-ups in your family about their experiences with the feelings of love. Did they feel an immediate click, or did it take them a while to figure out how they felt? Many people fall in love more than once and will have had different experiences each time!

Think about some of the things and people you love, and why. How do you express or show your love for each thing?
