Why do peacock feathers look like they have eyes?

Peacocks' long blue, green, and gold feathers have fascinated people for thousands of years! They display these feathers sometimes in a big fan, and on many of those feathers, it looks like there is the shape of an eye.

Some people used to think these eyes represented an all-seeing god. Other people thought they had magical powers and could be used to stop bad things from happening.

Now, it's believed that peacocks use their feather displays to attract peahens! Peahens are what female peacocks are called. When peacocks display their beautiful feathers, it is actually a way for them to get dates! The eye spot is a decoration in the feather display.

Language of Birds

Peacocks use their feathers to communicate, but they also make shrieking and honking sounds to communicate with other peacocks.

Are there birds around your home? Take a moment to watch them, and see how they communicate with one another.  Do they squawk? Do they chirp? Do they sing songs? What do you think they're saying?

A great way to attract birds to your yard is by putting up a bird feeder. Talk to a grown-up and see if this is something you can do around your home.
