Why do knights wear armor?

Have you ever seen someone on TV or in the movies playing a character who was a knight on horseback from several hundred years ago, during the Middle Ages? Did you notice the loud, clanky, shiny suit of armor that the person wore?

Because knights were like soldiers or warriors, they wore armor for protection. Although it was not very easy or comfortable to wear, a knight’s big metal suit of armor provided protection from the most common weapons of the time.

Of course, the word armor refers to any sort of clothing that protects its wearer from weapons. Even though we often first think of knights’ armor, types of armor existed long before that, and other types still exist today! The way armor is made and worn has changed with the way weapons have also changed, as well as with the invention of new and better technology that can make stronger, safer, and more comfortable protection.

Protective Clothing

Modern-day armor is worn by people who need it, like soldiers and police officers. However, there are probably some things you wear for other sorts of protection. For example, you wear a winter coat to protect you from the cold, and you wear a hat in summer to shield you from the sun!

Can you think of any other examples of special clothing items that are worn for protection? A scientist’s safety goggles might be one idea, or a crossing-guard’s fluorescent vest might be another!
