You might have learned that when you go to the bathroom in a public place, you should always cover the toilet seat with some paper before sitting down. But what kinds of germs can you actually catch from the potty seat??
Although you don’t need to be scared of them, toilets do tend to collect a lot of germs. Common colds and the germs that cause stomach viruses are among the ones that are usually hanging out on a toilet seat. Luckily, you won’t usually catch these germs just by sitting on them – you’d either need to have a cut on your bottom for the germs to find their way in, or you’d have to touch the germs and then touch your mouth, nose, or eyes.
In a public bathroom, the toilet can sometimes be a little dirtier than usual because it’s used by a lot of people and it might not be cleaned very often. Although not always! Some public bathrooms have been found to have unusually clean toilet seats. But since you can never know just be looking, it’s always best to be careful. Covering the seat with some paper will help put a little more space between you and those germs, but the most important thing of all is to wash your hands after every time you go to the bathroom!!
