Why do I need sleep?

People love to sleep.  If your parent or caregiver wakes you up in the morning to go to school, you probably want nothing more than to just go back to sleep.  It’s not that you’re being lazy (or maybe it is – just a little bit.)  Your body wants you to sleep.  Studies show that kids may need between 9 and 13 hours of sleep a night.  You’ll need less and less as you get older.

We sleep so we don’t feel tired. If we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies will get more and more tired until we catch up!

Sleep lets our bodies refresh themselves. We heal and we grow in our sleep, but sleep also helps our brains develop!  Our brains are very active when our bodies sleep! A lot of scientists think that sleep plays a big part in helping us remember things, which helps us learn things!

Scientists are always learning more about why we sleep, so other reasons we sleep might still not be known.  It could be a while before we get those answers, so don’t stay up waiting! Get plenty of rest!

Dream Journal

Have you ever had a really fun dream and then wake up and forget what it was?  It might be fun to keep a dream journal where you write down or draw your dreams right after you wake up so you don’t forget them.

Many people try to interpret dreams and figure out what they mean.  Do your dreams remind you of anything from real life?

Some dreams might be scary. Writing them down might help you realize they aren’t real and you don’t need to be afraid.

Keeping a dream journal is a pretty cool way to see how creative your mind is.  Most times, people forget all about their dreams.  This way, you’ll be able to look back and remember them!
