Why do grown-ups have to go to work?

Wouldn’t it be nice if grown-ups like your parents or aunts and uncles didn’t have to go to work every day? If they didn’t go to work, they could stay home and play! But there are lots of reasons why grown-ups have to go to work.

For example, think about grown-ups who have jobs like doctor or police officer -- they have to go to work so they can help people who need them. Another reason why grown-ups have to go to work is because they need to earn money so they can buy things for your family like food and clothes. Lots of grown-ups also go to work because they like the job they have! Many grown-ups have worked and studied very hard for many years to be able to have their job.

Some grown-ups are lucky and have jobs where they can do their work while they’re at home with you, or they can take off a special extra day sometimes! But the people who work with the grown-ups you know rely on each other to get their work done, so having extra time off isn’t always very easy. -- Thankfully, we have weekends and holidays!

Career Day!

Do you know yet what you want to be when you grow up? There are so many choices! Doctors, fire-fighters, airplane pilots, farmers, store owners, teachers, scientists, artists, police officers, musicians, zookeepers, athletes, architects… the possibilities are endless!

Ask some of the grown-ups you know what job they have and what they do when they go to work. Maybe you can find an afternoon where you can visit that grown-up at work and see what it's like to have that job!
