If you’ve ever taken a break from swimming for a snack or a meal, it’s pretty likely that you’ve been told you need to wait for your food to digest before you’re allowed back in the water. – What’s the real concern about swimming after eating? Is it really that dangerous not to wait??

The reason most grown-ups tell kids to wait between eating and swimming is because they’re concerned that going right back into the pool will cause stomach cramps or vomiting which can interfere with how well you’re swimming or floating. Although no one is exactly sure how this belief first started, it’s been a rule around lots of pools for a very long time.

Even though a number of recent investigations and studies of this idea have said that the rumored risk of these problems might not actually be as tremendous as previously believed, giving your body a chance to rest and digest your meal before running back into the pool certainly can’t hurt! It’s important to always listen to and obey the water safety rules and tips of the grown-ups you are with. – And don’t worry, even if you have to sit and rest before getting back in the water, the pool will still be there when you’re waiting time is over!

Game time!

The good news about waiting a while before you go back in the pool is that it doesn’t have to be such a bad thing -- think of all the other games you can play while you wait!

What are some of your other favorite outdoor activities that you can do to pass the time? There’s flying a kite, or playing catch. You can also relax and read a book, or even just lie back and gaze at the clouds! – What other fun ideas can you think of??
