Who is Snoopy? |
Snoopy is a very popular cartoon character from the comic strip Peanuts. He is a beagle, the pet dog of Charlie Brown. You’ve probably seen both of them in the comics sections of the newspaper. If you haven’t seen them, grab a Sunday paper and try to find them.
Peanuts tells the funny stories of a bunch of young kids, Charlie Brown and his friends: Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Pig-Pen, and his sister Sally, among others. Snoopy the dog is generally a little smarter than all of the people, but he didn’t start out that way. For the first couple years, he was just an ordinary dog and didn’t even have a “thought bubble” to himself. He developed a lot since then. He is also talented and can use his ears to fly like a helicopter!
Charles Schulz (November 26, 1922 – February 12, 2000) was the cartoonist behind Peanuts’ entire run. When the strip was first published in 1950, it was actually called “Li’l Folks.” Even though the last original Peanuts comic was published on January 3, 2000, the comic still runs in many places today!
Thinking Inside the Boxes
Do you have an idea for a comic strip? You can make up your own world, or use one that already exists. You don’t even have to be a great artist. Even if you use stick people you can still tell a great story.
Get a piece of paper and draw four boxes on it. Give it a title, draw, and color. Use speech bubbles and thought bubbles so readers can know what the characters are thinking. Or maybe you can just show what the characters are feeling by drawing smiles, frowns, smirks, and wrinkled foreheads. You could have someone turn red if they are embarrassed!
Just because there’s only a couple of boxes to fill doesn’t mean comics are easy though. It can be tricky to tell a whole story in just a few pictures. Plan your story first, and have fun with it!
