What is the world’s biggest city? |
When it comes to measuring how big a city is, there are several different ways to consider its size! For example, the size of a city can be measured by the number of people who live there (the “population”), the geographical size of the city (how many miles or kilometers of space it takes up), the approximate number of people who live per mile or per kilometer, and more!
Because there are so many different ways to measure, it’s hard to say which single city is the very biggest in the world. According to the approximate sizes of their populations, some of the world’s biggest cities include Tokyo, Japan; Mexico City, Mexico; Mumbai, India; Seoul, South Korea; New York City, US; Shanghai, China; and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The populations of these huge cities (and sometimes their surrounding areas, too) range from about 10 to 30 million people in size!
Bigger – is it better?
Have you ever been to any of the huge cities named above? If so, what was it like? Did the city feel really big? Why or why not??
If you haven’t been to any of the big cities named above, what was the biggest city you ever went to? What did you like or not like about that big city?
Think about some advantages and disadvantages there might be to living in a really big city. One advantage might be having more choice in where to go or what to do, but a disadvantage might be that it would be more crowded and you’d probably have less space and less privacy than in a smaller city or town!
What other ideas can you think of??
