What is the World Cup? |

While lots of sports host World Cup competitions, people who talk about “The World Cup” are usually talking about the international soccer (football) championship held every four years!
The World Cup is organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (World Football Association), or FIFA. The first-ever World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, with the opening game taking place on July 13th. The idea to hold an international soccer tournament was the idea of Jules Rimet (the president of FIFA starting in 1921) who believed that it would be a way of bringing together soccer players of all types from around the world!
Today, the World Cup is one of the most watched and loved sporting tournaments in the world! Billions of people across the globe tune in every four years to root for their favorite teams!!
In the summer of 2010, the World Cup will be held in South Africa. Previous host countries in recent years have been Germany in 2006, Korea and Japan in 2002, France in 1998, and the United States in 1994!
