What is the Super Bowl? |
by Mya Kagan (whyzz writer) >> more about the author

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League. It’s considered a major sporting event (especially in the United States) which millions of people watch every year!
The first Super Bowl (also known at the time as the “NFL-AFL World Championship Game”) was held in January 1967, as the final game of the 1966-season. At that time, there were two different football leagues in the United States – the National Football League (NFL) as well as the American Football League (AFL). The Super Bowl game was created so that the two leagues could compete – one team from each league played for the winning title!
Then, in 1970, the AFL and NFL merged their collective 26 teams together under the name of the NFL. However, this one umbrella league retained two conferences based on the original joined leagues – the American Football Conference (which consisted of the ten AFL teams as well as three NFL teams) and the National Football Conference (which consisted of the other 13 NFL teams). Today, the Super Bowl is played between the winning team of each conference!
People who watch the Super Bowl usually get really excited for the day of the game – “Super Bowl Sunday”!
Lots of people watch the game with their friends or other family members. Does your family have any special traditions for watching this big sporting event? Besides football, are there any other sports that you or your family follow closely??
