The longest bridge in the world is generally considered to be the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. It is a two-lane, almost 24 miles (38.5 km) long, bridge that famously spans Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana. The first lane opened in 1956, with the second opening in 1969, and now over 40,000 cars cross it every day!

However, the actual longest bridge in the world is very hard to determine, because so many people have different ways of deciding it. Some people may measure a bridge from the entryway to the exit, while others only measure the section that goes above water. One such example is the Bang Na Expressway in Thailand; while it may technically be longer than the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, at 33.5 miles (54 km), only a small portion of the structure actually goes above water, so it is not always actually considered a "true" bridge!

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway may have some competition for the title of world's longest bridge come 2010 — that is when construction is scheduled to begin on the Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Causeway in the Middle East. This bridge is expected to be almost 25 miles (40 km) long and will connect the two states of Qatar and Bahrain!
