Take a look at a map of China. Have a grown-up help you locate some of the regions and landscapes mentioned above, like mountain ranges and rivers!
Where are some of China’s big cities located? What’s the land around them like – is it mountainous, or near a river or a sea? What do you think it would be like to live there??
Have you ever looked at China on a map? It’s pretty hard to miss – located in Asia, China is the third-largest country in the world in terms of land.
China shares borders with 14 other countries (including India, Russia, North Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Pakistan) as well as three seas (the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea).
The landscape in China contains lots of hills and mountains, including the Himalayas in the west. There are also forests, swamps (near the South China Sea), and even deserts (like the Gobi desert in north parts of China, which continues up into Mongolia). China also has three very important rivers: The Huang He, the Yangtze, and the Pearl. Water from these rivers helps with growing crops like rice and wheat.
Additionally, China has some very urban areas with large cities. The biggest city in China is Shanghai (with 15 million people!), followed by Beijing (the capital) and Chongqing. About a fifth of all the people in China live in cities.
