What is the horizon?

If you look out as far as the eye can see, you may notice a line that seems to sit at the bottom of the sky (or the top of the land, depending on how you look at it)! This line is called the horizon, and it forms where the Earth and the sky seem to meet.

The horizon looks different depending on where you’re standing.
If there are no trees, mountains or buildings to block it, you can look out in all directions and see the horizon, so it forms a giant circle all the way around you! The higher up you are, the lower the horizon is in your view, and the farther into the distance you can see!

Have you ever noticed how the sky just above the horizon seems to glow orange as the sun finishes setting? Here’s your chance to make a picture of a colorful nighttime horizon! To begin, use watercolors to paint the land and the sky on a piece of white construction paper. Darker paint colors, such as purple and midnight blue for the sky and gray, black, dark green or brown for the land, work well for this picture!

Once the paint has dried, finish by using an orange piece of chalk or oil pastel to draw the orange glow just above horizon line. Then use your pointer finger to smudge the line. Enjoy as your horizon comes to life!
