What is the environment?

You probably hear a lot about “the environment” – that certain things are good for it or bad for it, and that's why you should recycle (because it's good for the environment) and shouldn't litter (because it's bad for environment). But what exactly is the environment, anyway??

The environment refers, basically, to what is around you. It's the surroundings in which you live, such as the land, water, and air which affect you and the other living things in your area like plants and animals. There are different environments in different places, depending on whether that place is a hot, dry desert or a cold, snowy mountain!

It's important to take care of the environment because it means clean air to breathe and fresh water to drink. Remember that the environment is important no matter where you go, meaning you should care about the environment even when you're visiting another place away from home. Having a healthy environment to live in helps you and everything in your surroundings to be healthy, too!

Environmentally savvy!

What are some things people do, both good and bad, which affect the environment?

Some examples of things people do which affect the environment in a bad way include littering (which harms animals and plants), wasting electricity or gasoline (which can cause pollution in the air and use up natural resources), and creating harmful and unnecessary noise (which can disturb the lives of animals).

Some examples of things people do which affect the environment in a good way include recycling (which re-uses materials to create less waste), planting trees (which helps us have fresh air), and picking up trash when you see it on the ground (which reduces pollution)!
