What is the atmosphere?

Have you ever been on an airplane? Did you go higher and higher, above the clouds and far into the sky? You were on a tour of the atmosphere!

The atmosphere is the mixture of gases surrounding our Earth. These gases include nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, water vapor and more...

Our atmosphere stretches almost 350 miles from the Earth’s surface. The greater the distance from the ground, the thinner the gases become!

The atmosphere protects us from some of the sun’s harmful rays. It holds in heat so our Earth is a comfortable temperature. With the help of the clouds in the atmosphere, water can fall back to the Earth after it evaporates from the ground. Let’s not forget that the atmosphere gives us the air we need in order to live!

Because our atmosphere is so important, we must make sure that we take good care of it. Not polluting the air is a great way to keep our atmosphere clean!

The four layers of the atmosphere are the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere.

The troposphere is the closest layer to the ground. Clouds and weather exist in this layer!
