Are there certain books you love, cartoons you enjoy or athletes you admire? Do you have a favorite amusement park, website or musician? These people, places and things may seem very different from one another, but they are all part of the arts, entertainment and ideas that make up popular culture, also known as pop culture.

Pop culture is the combination of interests and activities that a group of people share! Movies, TV shows, actors, singers, toys, games, sports, and clothes are all a part of pop culture.  Many items from pop culture are bought or enjoyed by people for entertainment during their free time. If a large number of people know about it, talk about it and experience it, chances are it’s a part of pop culture!

It can be fun to notice all of the pop culture references that “pop” up in the world around us! These references happen when something from popular culture is cleverly mentioned, like when you’re watching a TV show and one of the characters sings a line from a song that many people like.

Many animated movies, especially funny ones, are packed with pop culture references. In fact, it can be a lot of fun to watch something that mentions a part of pop culture you enjoy. Like laughing at a joke with a friend or remembering something that entertains you, noticing a pop culture reference can help you feel connected to the people around you!
