Be Prepared!
Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are types of plants that are common in North America. The plants all have a type of oil known as “urushiol,” which most people are allergic to. The allergic reaction it causes is usually a red and very itchy rash, often with blisters or hives. Ouch!
One of the difficulties with poison ivy, oak, and sumac is that the allergic reaction isn’t just limited to touching the plant itself. Touching anything that has been in contact with these plants (like pets or clothing) can also cause a rash to form!
The best way to deal with poison ivy is to avoid it altogether! The plant is famous for having three leaves per stem, which is why many people remember “Leaves of three – let it be!”
Most people who get a poison ivy, oak, or sumac rash are able to treat it with just time and maybe some over-the-counter medicines from the store. Of course, if any part of a poison ivy rash ever concerns you, it’s always best to talk to the grown-ups in your family or your doctor!
Be Prepared!
If you’re going to be outside playing in an area with lots of trees and plants or doing an activity like camping or hiking, it’s a good idea to be prepared with how to handle poison ivy, oak, and sumac.
Have a grown-up help you look up some photos of the plants so you can easily identify them if or when you see them. You can also be prepared by wearing proper clothing (pants, closed-toe shoes) that will protect you from accidentally brushing up against them.
What are some other ways in which you should always be prepared when venturing around outside? Having plenty of water to drink is one great idea, and a map or compass for a hike is also very important. What other instructions and advice have the grown-ups in your family given to you??
