What is peace? |
by Kate Simmons >> more about the author

Peace and quiet. Peace and calm. World peace. Have you heard any of these phrases? The word peace can have different meanings. Some people use peace to describe that feeling of tranquility, or calmness and inner happiness. When many feel peaceful, they are not scared, angry, or worried. They may even feel relaxed and treat others with the utmost kindness and respect.
At other times, the word peace can mean freedom from argument or fighting. For example, when it is not a time of war, it may be a time of peace. However, peace means more than simply getting along with others! A peaceful world is one in which different types of people understand and help one another to create safe, healthy, and happy living for all. Peace means appreciating one another’s differences and celebrating what makes each of us unique!
What are some ways that you can spread peace to others? Think about
the little things you do each day that are helpful and calming. For
example, have you ever helped a friend solve a problem? Spread kindness
through the classroom by treating others with respect? Encouraged
friends to talk things out if they become irritated with one another?
Enjoyed the relaxing quiet of nature?
Can you
think of other ways you can be a source of peace for your friends,
family, and classmates? Chances are, they’ll return the favor one day
when your life needs a little peace and calm!
