Abracadabra! Alakazam! Hocus pocus—wow! Shazam! Have you ever seen a magic show? Maybe a magician waved a wand and pulled a rabbit from a hat or made a dove appear from under a cape. Or perhaps a friend showed you a great card trick. In fact, during a magic trick, a person or object may be changed, or may even disappear or reappear.

When some people use the word “magic,” they believe that an invisible or inexplicable force has caused something amazing to happen! To others, “magic” describes an illusion—the APPEARANCE that something remarkable has happened, even if things aren’t what they seem…

In some stories and tales, magic is used to help or protect characters. Perhaps you’ve read a fairy tale in which a frog turns into a prince or a character is given special powers!

Magic tricks come in many shapes and sizes. Some involve small items, such as cards, coins, and household objects. Others involve larger props, such as boxes and curtains.

A magician—the person who makes the magic happen—may enjoy entertaining others with magic as much as he or she enjoys creating it! At times the words “sorcerer” and “wizard” are also used to describe an individual who is skilled in the ways of magic!

Remember, if you ever want to practice being a magician, make sure you learn the ropes from a trusted pro. Keep your magic tricks safe and fun!
