What is geometry? |

Now it’s time to practice drawing shapes, but with a twist! Begin by drawing a circle. Once you’ve finished drawing, see if you can make the circle into something else. For example, can you turn your circle into a pizza by coloring in cheese and pepperoni? Now draw a square. Can your square become a gift with a bow on top? See if you can continue with other shapes, such as an oval and a rectangle. You’ve just combined geometry and a little imagination to create art!
Circle, square, triangle, rectangle. These are just a few of the shapes you’ll encounter if you study geometry! Geometry is a type of math that examines shapes, figures, and how they relate to one another! People who study geometry draw, measure and compare shapes. They learn facts about shapes and figures and study how to prove those facts. They spend time working with lines, points, angles and surfaces.
Geometry is one of the oldest areas of mathematics. There are different types of geometry, such as Euclidian geometry (the study of flat surfaces) and solid geometry (the study of 3-D objects). Many people use geometry on a daily basis as part of their jobs. For example, engineers, architects and interior designers all use geometry at work!
