What is friendship? |
by Kate Simmons >> more about the author

Take a few minutes to make a special note for a friend. Brainstorm his or her unique qualities, then let these qualities inspire you as you make your card or letter. Perhaps you can use your friend’s favorite color, or draw pictures of items that are important to that person (for example, a soccer ball if your friend plays on a soccer team or enjoys playing soccer with you).
Think about the friends who make you smile. What makes these people so special to you? For example, do you care for them because they are kind? Understanding? Brave? Funny? Perhaps they are important to you because they are good friends. When you share a friendship with another person, you have a special relationship with someone you care about, trust, and respect.
Our friends are there to laugh with us, celebrate with us, and enjoy life with us. But being a true friend means supporting another person through the tough times as well as the happy times. A big hug, a listening ear, and understanding are three things friends can offer one another through life’s challenges.
You may have friends you see every day, while others may live out of town and enjoy our company one or two times each year. There are some friends you may see even less, but keep in touch with in other ways, such as letters, phone calls, and email.
And remember, friends don't just have to be other kids your age. Friends can be older or younger than you, and can even be related to you! Relatives like siblings and cousins, and even parents, can all be great friends. Friendship is all about understanding and appreciating others for who they truly are!
