What is dust?

If you’ve ever helped out around the house with the cleaning, you’ve probably noticed that there can be a lot of dust! Where does all of this dust come from? Is there a magical Dust Fairy dropping it from the sky like snow??

The answer is that dust comes from all around you. Some dust comes from things that are outside, such as pollen, dirt from soil, pollution, and more. Inside, dust tends to come from things like pet hair, bedding, carpet, crumbs of food, and even you! – Humans naturally lose things like dead skin and hair without knowing it, which often turns into dust!

Because dust isn’t very good to breathe in, it’s important to wipe it away carefully and do your best to keep tabletops and shelves clean. Otherwise, you might just find yourself – aaachooo! – sneezing a lot!

Dusting off

Did you know that it’s usually not dust itself which makes people sneeze? The sneeziest part of dust generally comes from little critters called dust mites who like to munch on dust. (Yuck!) The thing which makes people sneeze is usually the almost-invisible poop left behind by the hungry dust mites – gross!!
