What is democracy?

by Mya Kagan (whyzz writer) >> more about the author

In order to make laws and maintain order, countries have governments, which refers to the leaders, systems, and organizations that oversee and represent the country. There are different kinds of governments that give different amounts of power to the country’s leaders, and different amounts of power to the country’s people.

A democracy is a type of government where the people vote to decide about the leaders and laws that they want. In democracies, all citizens get a free, equal, and fair vote. – Because this gives everyone the chance to make decisions about their government, it’s generally considered to be a very fair type of government!

Take a vote!

Democracies have been around for a long time. They very first ones existed in Greece over 2,000 years ago!

What are some things about a democracy that sound fair to you? Does using a system where everybody votes sound like something which makes sense, or do you think rules, laws, and leaders should be chosen a different way?

Have you ever participated in a vote, maybe while trying to decide with some friends about what movie to watch or what game to play?? Next time you and your friends need to make a decision, try voting on it!
