A comedy is a play, book, movie or TV show that is fun, entertaining and often makes us laugh. It can be full of surprises or silly situations that we don't expect and it almost always has a happy ending. The word comedy can also be used to describe an event or occurrence that was funny.

Ancient Greece is where our modern day comedy comes from. The Greeks would regularly put on plays and the funny ones (which often had music) were called comedies. The more serious stories that often had sad or intense endings were called tragedies. This tradition continued for thousand of years and helped create our entertainment today.

It comes in threes!

Have you ever seen the magic trick where a magician pulls a rabbit out of his hat? What if you saw a magician pull a rabbit out of his hat two times in a row and the third time…. he pulled out a turkey! Do you think that would be silly or funny? That is kind of how comedy works. We think we know how something will happen and then the unexpected happens in a silly way, and it makes us laugh! Comedy traditions tell us that for some reason, when we see these silly things happen in sets of three, we find them funnier.
