What is an encyclopedia?

It’s fun to learn new things! One great source of information about the world is an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is a work filled with knowledge about many different topics, or a work that features detailed information about one subject in particular. For example some on-line encyclopedias have facts about everything from plants to TV shows! Others may focus on one area, such as animals.

When you’re browsing an encyclopedia, how do you know where to start? The information is listed alphabetically! For example, all of the topics that start with “a” would be grouped at the beginning, while the words that start with “z” would be at the end.

Some encyclopedias are collections of books, while others are collections of information that can be found online. One thing is for sure: reading encyclopedias teaches you about living things, places, events, ideas, works of art and entertainment, and much, much more!

Think of three things you’d like to learn more about. Perhaps you want to know more about frogs, or you wonder where you can find the Nile River, or where corn comes from! Now use an encyclopedia to find the answers!

Feel free to ask a grown-up for help. Whether you use a printed encyclopedia or read the information on a computer screen, you’ll enjoy this hunt for information! Make sure you share your findings with a friend or family member who loves learning as much as you do!
