What is adoption?

Adoption is one way people become a family. Sometimes parents can't make a baby that grows in a mommy's uterus (a special place near the mommy’s tummy where a baby grows). Other times parents decide they would like to adopt a baby or child who doesn't have a home or parents that are able to care for them. In either case, the parents decide to make a family by adopting a baby or child whose birth parents were not able to care for them or any baby at that time.   

Parents who have adopted a baby or child love their child just as much as parents who have given birth to their baby. They take care of their baby just the way they would if one of them would have given birth to the child. They are a family who enjoys playing and having fun together. 

There are lots of special ways that people become a family. Some parents have children they gave birth to. Some parents have children they adopted. Other families include step-sisters and step-brothers or half-siblings. Families can come together in lots of different ways!

Think about your family. Name some of the things that make families so special. For example, families are full of love and kindness. Families have special movie nights. Families like to ride bicycles together. Your family might also have common interests and neat activities that everyone enjoys doing together!
