Have you ever read a story where something happened in a swamp? Because of their special characteristics, swamps can make really interesting settings!
Think about some things that make a swamp a unique place: All of the animals that live there, the tall trees covering the mushy or wet ground, and the damp atmosphere all around!
If you were making up a story that happened in a swamp, what kind of characters do you think would live there, and why??
Have you ever been to a swamp or seen a picture of one? A swamp is a place where water does not drain well, so the ground in a swamp is wet and might be either mushy or covered with water. Unlike marshes, which are wet and mostly have only grass, a swamp has trees.
The soil in a swamp has lots of minerals. Many swamps are located next to rivers or the coast, which is where they get their water and why the water in a swamp can be either freshwater or saltwater! Swamps are also home to lots of animals like alligators, frogs, fish, birds, and many more!!
