What is a pier? |
by Brian Griffin (whyzz writer) >> more about the author

A pier is a walkway that stretches out from the shore, above a body of water. Piers are sort of like bridges that don't go anywhere! They have dead ends. But piers are very useful, and sometimes very fun! People can use them to go fishing, since piers can reach deeper water that people can't normally reach from the shore.
Piers can also be used as a walkway to get to big boats that can't get too close to the shore.
They can be very narrow, but some can be very large. Some piers even have whole amusement parks on them!

Pier and Peer
Pier sounds like another word in the English language: "peer". You know what a pier is. A "peer" is a person in the same group as you. Normally we use the word to talk about people who are your same age. If you're in school, your classmates are your peers!
"Peer" can also mean "to look curiously at something." You might peer out a window if you hear a noise outside.
Try using each of these piers/peers in sentences.
