What is a Nor’easter? |
Nor’easters are some of the most powerful winter storms on Earth! They happen along the East Coast of the United States, and they are huge, with snow, rain, sleet, floods, and big ocean waves! They get their names from the words north and east. The strong winds that blow in from the ocean in the Northeast are fuel for the storm. Sometimes, the gusts of winds are even stronger than in hurricanes!
Nor’easters can even look like hurricanes, because they can have an eye, which is a hole in the clouds at the center of the storm. The strong winds swirl the storm clouds and leave an empty spot in the center where things are pretty calm.
The falling snow of Nor’easters isn’t the kind you want to go out in play in. Because these storms are so powerful, the safest place to be is inside when they happen. You may even get a snow day from school!
Weather Wear
Do you look at the weather reports ahead of time or are you surprised by the weather every day? Even the best weather reports aren’t always exact, so you still might be surprised! If you and a grown-up read the weather report together in the paper or online, or watch it on TV, you’ll have a head start planning for the next day!
Check out your local weather report and use it to try to plan your outfits for the next couple days. If you see there’s going to be a rainy day with strong winds, are you going to wear a t-shirt and flip-flops? If it’s 98°F and sunny, are you going to wear a sweater?
Each day check to see if the weather report and your outfit match the actual weather. Is it colder than you thought? Is there rain when you thought there’d be sunshine?
Have fun with your outfits, but you might want to run them by a grown-up first before you wear them, just in case!
