What is a jester? |

The Kings and Queens from hundreds of years ago liked to relax and be entertained just like we do today! They didn't have TV or the internet though. Instead, they hired someone to entertain them. This person was called a "jester."
Jesters were a lot like the stand-up comedians of their day. They would come and perform for the king or queen and try to make them laugh with jokes and tricks. Jesters sometimes dressed in bright colors with big floppy hats with bells on them. Their wacky costumes hopefully made them more entertaining!
Some jesters still exist today. However, there are many other options for entertainment, so they are much less common.

Do you know any jokes? Any tricks? A common trick for jesters was juggling. See if you can put together a short show to entertain your family. Think about how hard this would have been for jesters to do as their job every day!
