What is a funeral? |
by Sallie Sanborn, MS (whyzz expert) >> more about the author
A funeral is a time and place where people say goodbye to someone who has died. The body that has died is put into a special box called a casket and the casket is buried in the ground at a place called a cemetery. A cemetery is a place where people who have died are buried.
Sometimes at funerals there is talking, praying, singing, and almost always, crying. People often cry when someone they love dies and that is OK. People can be really sad and still be OK. People can cry a lot and still be OK. You have seen people be really mad and they are still OK, they don't stay mad and people won't always be sad. Your family will still smile at you and want to hear your singing and watch your new cartwheel. You can be sad about someone who has died and still be excited about your sleepover or Halloween. It is OK to not want to go to a funeral too, we just want you to know what happens at a funeral so you can decide and not wonder about it.
When/while the talking, praying, singing and crying are going on people are allowed to put dirt on top of the casket that is in the hole. This is called the burial, or burying. After the funeral is over, people go home and still tell stories and hug and cry and share their sad feelings and also their happy and silly feelings too.
