What is a fairy tale?

Kings, queens, dragons and elves...you can find these characters in fairy tales! Fairy tales are special kinds of stories.  

There are many things that make a story a fairy tale. Some fairy tales were told year after year before somebody wrote them down on paper. Many fairy tales have a little bit of magic in them—things happen in fairy tales that don’t always happen in our daily lives, which makes them extra fun to read!    

Fairy tales are often set in kingdoms where princes and princesses live. Many fairy tales have happy endings. Some even teach us important lessons.

Fairy tales come from countries all over the world. In fact, many tales from different countries are a lot alike, proving that people around the world love stories with fun characters, a bit of magic, and a hopeful message!

Can you make up your own fairy tale? Start by picking your main character, who will be the hero of your tale. Will it be a troll? A princess? A knight?  

Now give your character a problem that needs solving. Does he or she embark on a journey to find something important? Does your character face an adventure with tricky moments along the way?

Think about other characters to include. Is there a not-so-nice character that causes the main problem or makes it more difficult to solve? Is there another character that uses a bit of magic to help your hero?
