A dungeon is a room in a castle used for holding prisoners.  Hundreds of years ago, when kings and queens were the main rulers of land, there weren't very many police stations or jails. Criminals had to be put somewhere, and many times, in castles, the solution was to have a dungeon.

Sometimes dungeons were very high up in towers. Do you know the story of Rapunzel?  She was trapped in a type of dungeon, high off the ground with no escape (except her long hair!)  Other dungeons were dark rooms underground where criminals were chained to walls.  Sometimes the only way into an underground dungeon was through a small trap door in the ceiling! A dungeon was certainly not a very pleasant place to be.

Modern Castles

Castles still do exist today, but the people in charge don't always live in them.  Who is the "king" or "queen" of the place where you live?  If you're in the United States, this person could be the president.  What is the place where this person lives and works like? Is it a castle? Is it a mansion? Do you think there's a dungeon?
