What is a census? |
by Carly Schuna >> more about the author
A census is a collection of information about a specific group of people. The best known census among most people in America is taken by the United States Census Bureau. Among other facts, the Bureau gathers information about how many people live in America, what their ethnic backgrounds are, and what languages they speak. It also checks on how old they are and what kind of jobs they have.
The U.S. Census is done every 10 years to get updated information about the people living in America. The census also provides facts that help government officials decide how to spend money in ways that will most benefit the country.

As an activity, kids can do their own census. (of the house, their class, the neighborhood...). Have them make up questions and then help tally up answers!
