What is a belief?

A belief is something a person accepts as truth. If someone believes in ghosts, that person believes that ghosts are real.

It’s pretty easy to believe the sky is blue on a nice sunny day, but a lot of times, people will need to trust or accept something that they cannot see or touch. You might not be able to see gravity, but you probably believe it’s real. What other types of things do you believe in?

Many people have very serious religious beliefs. A person may believe in a god or angels. If you disagree with those beliefs or have different religious beliefs, it’s important to remember that they are very important and real to a person that believes them. Beliefs often help people figure out how to live their lives and interact with other people. Beliefs are very powerful.

 I Believe…

Most people believe in the ideas of right and wrong.  Where do your beliefs come from?  What sorts of things do you think are right, and what do you think is wrong?

Is recycling a right thing to do? How about lying? How about cleaning your room?

Did your beliefs in what is right come from parents? How about other grown-ups? Teachers? How about TV? All of our beliefs come from somewhere.  It can be very interesting to trace them back to where they began.

Try writing down a list of your beliefs. Check back with it every so often to see if you believe new things or if your beliefs have changed.
