What is a barn?

A barn seems almost like a house, but the doors and windows on the outside are usually kind of different, and the inside is probably very different! Instead of furniture, there might be hay or piles of wood, and instead of people, there are usually a whole bunch of animals!

A barn is usually found on a farm. These special buildings are mostly used for housing animals, storing grain or hay, or keeping equipment. Can you think of any ways that might be helpful to a farmer? If it’s cold or raining, the barn is a safe and dry place for the farmer’s animals to sleep! The barn would also keep supplies or grains and hay out of the weather, too.

Have you ever noticed the color of most barns? – Red! One good reason to paint barns red is because the barn is like the heart of the farm!

Build-a-barn!

Draw a picture of a barn. What animals live in your barn? Do you have other animals who also live outside of your barn? Make sure you draw all of the animals that are inside and outside of your barn, too!

How is each of the animals in your picture helpful to the farmer and his farm? For example, a farmer might keep chickens for eggs, and cows for milk!
