What does humane mean? |

Even though they aren’t the same as humans and animals, plants are also alive and deserve our respect. Avoid taking branches off of living trees or pulling flowers up out of the ground. Appreciate and admire the beauty of Mother Nature!

What are some ways to be mindful and humane to the living creatures around you? One example might be to have a grown-up help you catch spiders with a cup and some paper so you can let them outside, rather than squishing them if you find them in the house. Another example would be to always play fun games like fetch with you dog, rather than games that try to trick or tease the animal.

The word “humane” is usually used to refer to how a person or other living creature is treated. Humane treatment means being kind, compassionate, and caring. All people deserve basic human rights. These rights include things like respect, fair treatment, and the opportunity to lead a happy life, which animals and other living creatures deserve too. When we treat other living things with dignity and consideration, we are being humane!
Just like different types of people all deserve equal, kind, fair, and humane treatment, the same things applies to animals too. From the biggest whale in the ocean to the smallest gnat on your wall – living creatures of all shapes and sizes matter equally. We are being humane when we shoo a fly out the window instead of swatting it, and when we handle pets gently and avoid pulling on tails and ears or squeezing too tight when we hug.
Humane treatment is about providing more than just basic needs; it’s also about treating other people and other living creatures the same way we’d want to be treated ourselves. Our world has an endless number of awesome, wonderful, unique living things. When we are mindful of them, we are being humane!
