What does an illustrator do? |

Do you like to draw or paint pictures? Professional artists, or illustrators, use their talents and skills to create pictures that communicate information to the people who see them!
There are many different types of illustrators. Some draw or paint pictures to go with the stories of comic books or children’s books. Others make pictures for detailed works like school textbooks or medical journals, while some create images for magazines, newspapers, greeting cards and brochures.
At times illustrators are hired by companies to create pictures that help them sell the products they make. Some illustrators use the computer to make or alter their pictures. As you can see, there are many ways for illustrators to use their skills!
Illustrators are often creative people who have a great imagination! Many illustrators study art in college, and some even study Illustration. Illustrators may work as freelancers, which means that instead of working for one company all of the time, they complete projects for different companies!
Now it’s your turn to be an illustrator! Start with a story that
you like… Maybe it’s a story you’ve made up, or a story that a friend or
family member has told you. Can you imagine how the characters in the
story look? How would you draw them?
Next,
think about what happens in this story. Are there any parts of the story
that are especially important or would make great pictures?
Now
that you’ve done some good brainstorming, use your ideas to illustrate
the story you’ve chosen. Draw the characters just the way you’ve
imagined them, and focus on the parts of the story that you’ve picked as
the most important or the most fun to draw!
