Have you ever received a letter or a postcard or maybe even a package in the mail?? Did you wonder where it came from, and how your mailman knew where to bring it?!

There are different types of Postal Workers who all have slightly different tasks that they spend their day doing. Clerks, for example, generally work in the post office and help people in line with buying postage, sending mail, and collecting packages. “Behind the scenes” at the post office are the Sorters, who work alongside sorting machines to organize and sequence the mail according to the address where it’s going. Then, of course, there are the Mail Carriers, who deliver the mail to the homes or businesses where it’s going! In some areas, Mail Carriers travel by foot while in others they drive in a small truck or a car. Mail Carriers also collect mail that people want to send out and bring it back to the Post Office for sorting and shipping!

In the U.S., billions of letters are mailed and delivered by Postal Workers every week! Mailmen must often work long hours, starting early in the morning or finishing late in the evening, to help all of our letters to get to their destinations on time. Next time you send something in the mail, think about all of the workers along the way who will help it arrive on the other end!

KIT – Keep In Touch!

Mail is really useful for keeping in touch with people who live far away. You can send them a nice picture to let them know you are thinking about them, or a gift for a birthday or a holiday!

Do you have any friends or family members who live far away? Draw a nice picture for them, and then find out their address and send it in the mail!

Try to remember when you send the letter, and then see how long it takes until it the other person receives it.

Isn’t it cool that something you made is able to travel so far??!
