What does a carpenter do? |
Do you like to pretend to build houses or other things made of wood? Do you have a toy toolbox? If so, maybe some day you'd like to become a carpenter! Carpenters are people who have the skills to build, repair, carve or install structures made of wood.
Carpenters tend to be people who like to work with their hands, can work accurately and carefully, and know how to read building diagrams and plans.
Carpenters can build big structures, like a house, or smaller ones, like a tool shed, staircase, cabinet or even furniture.
While a number of carpenters are self-employed--they work for themselves and take on different, usually small, jobs--others work for big construction companies. Some have specialties: They may be especially good at restoring furniture, for example, or installing stairs.
Being a carpenter is hard work--but we wouldn’t have wooden houses or furniture or stairs or many other things we need without them!
Many carpenters who are starting out study with professional carpenters to learn how to use saws, drills, and other hand tools. Remember that these tools are for trained experts only!
