“The wheels on the bus go round and round…”
Are you one of the many kids who rides a yellow bus to and from school every day? If so, you might know the name of your regular bus driver! Have you ever wondered about that person’s job??
The job of a bus driver goes beyond just steering the bus! There are lots of different bus drivers who drive different types of vehicles, from school buses to public transportation buses to tour buses and more!
Bus drivers are responsible for the safety of their passengers, which can sometimes be as many as 100 people! They are responsible for driving their assigned route (and sometimes planning out which way to go) as well as for taking fares and answering passengers’ questions about schedules and directions. Bus drivers also check the safety of their vehicle and make sure it has working safety equipment like first aid kits and fire extinguishers. They often write and submit reports about their trips or routes. In the case of school bus drivers, they also help enforce rules about behavior and conduct, to make sure everyone on board stays happy and safe!
Because of traffic and weather problems, the job of a bus driver can sometimes be difficult! All bus drivers have to pass tests to operate their types of vehicles and to ensure that they have adequate vision, hearing, and other important abilities. Next time you get off the bus, be sure to say “thanks” to your driver!
Lots of people take buses because it helps keep extra cars off the road and can save gasoline. – It’s like riding on one really big carpool! Other forms of public transportation, like trains and subways, help too! (And of course, so does walking!)
What are some different situations in which a person might take a bus? Going to and from school or work, while touring around a new place, or as a way to get from one city to another would all be really good answers! Can you think of any others??
